The City of Vladimir is one of the oldest Russian communities. It is located in the heart of the historic Vladimir region, 180 kilometers (115 miles) northeast of Moscow on the bank of the Klyazma River.

The city was founded in either 990 or 1108, depending on which historians you consult. For the better part of two centuries (from 1157 to the mid 1300s) it was the capital of ancient Rus. Vladimir, with a current population of over 315,000, is considered one of the major members of the Golden Ring of communities which have played a significant role in Russian history and are rich in arts and culture.

Among many other attractions, the City boasts three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Golden Gates, Vladimir's unofficial symbol, and the Assumption and St. Demetrius Cathedrals.

Currently the regional capital, Vladimir is home to two major universities, several top-flight drama and puppet theaters, two major concert halls, and a host of talented performers, artists, and artisans.

The Vladimir Girls’ Choir and Young Men’s Quartet is part of the Choral Music Centre of Vladimir-Suzdal Rus, which began in 1974 with the founding by Eduard Markin of the Vladimir Chamber Choir.

The Girls’ Choir was started in 2001 as a private, extra-curricular activity. Today its members range in age from 12 to 18.

Its repertoire consists of Russian and European classics, jazz, folk songs and special arrangements created by Eduard Markin. When joined by the Young Men’s Quartet, the unique combination of girls’ and men’s voices allows for the creation of unusual and interesting soundscapes.

In 2007 the group won Grand Prize of the International Competition “Rainbow of Stars” in Varna, Bulgaria. About half of the young singers are currently studying English in school, but none has previously been to the United States.
